According to a joint statement signed by the awards’ Chairperson, Peter Mwasalyanda, and Vice Chairperson, Rose Reuben, a total of 624 entries had been submitted through the awards portal by June 15, 2026. The statement noted that the strong response reflects growing participation by journalists and media organizations in the competition, highlighting their commitment to producing stories and feature articles that contribute to national development. Statistics released by the organizers show that 20 entries, representing 4.8 percent of all submissions, were received in the media house awards category, while 25 entries, equivalent to 4.0 percent, were submitted under the special national awards category. The largest share of submissions—569 entries, or 91.2 percent—were received under the sector-specific award categories. Newspapers submitted 178 entries, representing 29 percent of the total, while television stations submitted 102 entries, equivalent to 16 percent. Radio stations accounted for 60 entries, or 10 percent, while magazines submitted only eight entries, representing one percent of all submissions. According to the organizers, the trend reflects the growing use of digital platforms in the production and dissemination of development-oriented journalism in Tanzania. “This response demonstrates the increasing use of digital platforms in producing and distributing development news content, as well as the commitment of journalists to continue educating, informing and mobilizing society on issues related to the country’s development,” the statement said. The Samia Kalamu Awards have continued to serve as an important platform for recognizing the contribution of journalists in highlighting development issues and promoting reporting that supports social, economic, and national progress.
