Escalation Pattern: How Policies Targeting Trans People Lead to Harm

DBenitostock/Getty Images Public debates about transgender issues are often framed as disagreements over evidence or safety. In my new article published in the International Journal of Transgender Health , I argue current policy shifts are better understood as part of a recognisable escalation pattern. I call this “trans eliminationism” – efforts to remove trans people from social, legal or physical existence. The concept of eliminationism was developed by political scientist

The article argues that current policies targeting transgender people follow a recognizable pattern of escalation, termed 'trans eliminationism,' aiming to remove trans individuals from social, legal, or physical existence. This pattern ranges from social and legal erasure, such as restricting healthcare access and banning content, to more severe forms of harm. Mechanisms driving this escalation include dehumanization, framing the targeted group as a threat, and biological reductionism. These tactics lower moral inhibitions and justify increasingly restrictive measures. The author points to examples in the US and New Zealand, highlighting how weakened legal protections and normalized exclusion can pave the way for greater harm, including incarceration and violence.

This analysis of 'trans eliminationism' reveals a dangerous pattern of escalating policies targeting transgender individuals, moving from social and legal erasure towards more severe forms of harm.
