Variable-Incidence Wing Enhances Quadrotor Flight Endurance by 42%

The aerodynamic efficiency of conventional lifting-wing quadrotors is severely constrained by the rigid coupling between fuselage pitch attitude and wing angle of attack (AoA), which prevents the vehicle from maintaining optimal lift-to-drag performance across varying flight speeds. This study presents a novel variable-incidence lifting-wing quadrotor that effectively decouples fuselage attitude from wing aerodynamics. The proposed mechanism incorporates a 143 g lightweight l

Researchers have developed a novel variable-incidence lifting-wing quadrotor that significantly decouples fuselage attitude from wing aerodynamics, improving flight efficiency. This design achieves a maximum normalized power-saving ratio of 42.98% at 10 m/s compared to hover. The mechanism incorporates a lightweight lifting wing and a dual-actuator system. High-fidelity simulations and flight experiments validate the strategy, showing a net 13.22% efficiency improvement over fixed-incidence designs. Predictive analyses indicate the UAV can achieve an extended maximum flight endurance of 46.8 minutes and a practical range of 28.1 km, offering a robust solution for energy-constrained environments.

The development of a variable-incidence wing for quadrotors significantly enhances flight endurance and efficiency, offering a breakthrough for UAV technology in energy-constrained applications.
