Urgent Reallocation of Agricultural Subsidies Needed in Bangladesh, Study Finds

A recent World Bank report reveals significant disparities in the distribution and management of agricultural subsidies in Bangladesh, prompting calls for urgent reallocation. The study indicates that 80% of the Agriculture Ministry's budget is spent on fertilizer subsidies, with the top 20% of landowners receiving nearly half of these benefits. Conversely, the bottom 40% of farmers receive only 15%. This imbalance disadvantages small and marginal farmers who need the support most. The current subsidy policy primarily focuses on stabilizing rice prices, neglecting crucial areas like agricultural research, extension services, irrigation infrastructure, and market development. This focus also hinders crop diversification and farmers' ability to achieve fair prices. The report stresses the need to shift focus towards high-value crops and climate-resilient agriculture to meet changing consumer demands and ensure food security for the growing population.
