Number of executions in North Korea rose dramatically during Covid – report

A new report indicates that North Korea significantly escalated its use of the death penalty following its border closures at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG) documented an 117% surge in executions and death sentences in the period after January 2020 compared to the preceding five years. This increase is attributed to the regime leveraging its isolation and reduced international oversight to carry out more killings.
The findings highlight concerns about human rights abuses within North Korea and the potential for increased repression when the country isolates itself from the global community.
