Europe is facing an accelerating proliferation of new psychoactive substances, with a new type of drug appearing on the black market almost weekly, according to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA). The agency monitors over 1,000 new psychoactive substances, including more than 100 synthetic opioids. Nine new 'orphan opioids' have been identified, linked to over 30 deaths across Europe. The rapid development and emergence of these substances pose significant health risks that are not yet fully understood.
