The Ministry of Interior in North Macedonia is proposing amendments to the Citizenship Law to prevent the acquisition of Macedonian citizenship from being treated as a "transaction" for wealthy foreign investors. While the criterion for investment remains, the proposed changes aim to eliminate the possibility of abuse. This move follows instances where "golden passports" were obtained through investment, with some recipients later facing legal issues abroad, such as the case of Iranian Riza Saraf. The amendments would repeal the decree outlining criteria for special national interest, which currently allows for citizenship-by-investment programs. North Macedonia would join countries like Cambodia and Turkey in reforming such programs, aligning with European Commission recommendations on migration and security risks.
