A recent study conducted by researchers in the Netherlands investigated the impact of interacting with pets on stress levels. Using a smartphone app to survey participants multiple times daily, the study found that while interacting with either dogs or cats could lead to a short-term mood improvement, neither species effectively reduced overall stress. Surprisingly, the research indicated that cats might even exacerbate negative feelings associated with stress, whereas dogs appeared to have no significant impact. The findings challenge the common hypothesis that pet interaction acts as a form of social support capable of buffering stress. The study was published in the journal 'Frontiers in Psychology'.
This study offers counterintuitive findings on the stress-buffering effects of pet ownership, suggesting that the emotional benefits might be more nuanced and potentially negative for some pet owners, particularly those with cats.
