Bayreuth Festival Cancels Commemoration Event, Sparking Outrage
Als »Bankrotterklärung« bezeichnet Charlotte Knobloch die abgesagte Gedenkfeier bei den Bayreuther Festspielen. Sie kritisiert auch die Ausladung von Michel Friedman.
The Bayreuth Festival has canceled a planned commemoration event featuring Jewish publicist Michel Friedman, who was slated to speak on antisemitism and the processing of the Nazi past. Bavarian Minister of State for Science and the Arts, Markus Blume, criticized the decision, stating he expects the festival management to find a solution and demonstrate unity against antisemitism. Charlotte Knobloch, chairwoman of the Israelite Community, condemned the cancellation as a "bankruptcy declaration" and effectively an "invitation" to Friedman, questioning the stated security concerns. The Bavarian antisemitism commissioner also expressed irritation, warning of negative consequences for the critical examination of the festival's own Nazi history.
The cancellation of the commemoration event at the Bayreuth Festival has ignited controversy and raised serious questions about the institution's engagement with its past and the fight against antisemitism.
