Italy Investigates Apple Over iCloud Backup Practices Amid DMA Compliance Concerns

Italy's competition authority (AGCM), in cooperation with the European Commission, has launched an investigation into Apple's practices regarding iPhone and iPad backups. The AGCM alleges that Apple unfairly favors its own iCloud service by not allowing third-party cloud storage providers access to necessary functions for device backups. This investigation falls under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which designates Apple as a 'gatekeeper.' While the AGCM suggests Apple forces users towards iCloud, critics argue that alternative backup methods exist, including free options via computer, and that iCloud's primary appeal lies in its seamless integration and synchronization features rather than being the sole backup solution.
The investigation into Apple's iCloud practices raises questions about fair competition in the digital market and the implementation of the EU's Digital Markets Act.
