Mountain Hiking Risks: Experts Urge Thorough Preparation to Prevent Accidents

Rescue teams are increasingly called upon to assist injured or stranded hikers in the mountains, prompting a call for better preparation. Sebastiaan Admiraal, director of the Dutch Climbing and Mountaineering Association (NKBV), notes that many hikers underestimate the challenges, wearing inadequate footwear like sneakers for difficult routes. Recent incidents, including a fall by a 57-year-old Dutch man in Slovenia, underscore these risks. While overall fatalities may not be increasing, hikers are getting into trouble more often. Proper preparation involves researching routes, assessing personal fitness, and training for longer hikes. Upon arrival, checking with local tourist information for current conditions is crucial, as dangers range from extreme weather to rockfalls. Hikers are advised to wear layered clothing, carry a rain jacket, a thermal blanket, a charged phone, and sufficient water. Younger groups are also prone to underestimating risks, often influenced by social media, while older individuals may face challenges due to fitness, weight, and dehydration in heat, always needing to be prepared for sudden weather changes.
