The Wiezoloop in Wierden and the Vuurtorenloop half marathon in Hoek van Holland are among the events that will not proceed. Organizers cited safety concerns, including the combination of heat, high humidity, and potential thunderstorms, as reasons for cancellation. The Climate Classic cycling event will also see routes shortened or canceled. These cancellations come as the National Heat Plan is activated due to four consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 27 degrees Celsius. The RIVM advises extra attention for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children. This follows incidents at previous races where participants fell ill, and tragically, two participants died during marathons earlier in the year, although the direct link to heat is unclear.
The cancellations highlight the increasing impact of climate change on public events and the critical need for safety measures during extreme weather conditions.
