German Court Rules Against Mondelez Over Milka Packaging Changes; Company Appeals
A German court has ruled against Mondelez International regarding changes to Milka chocolate bar packaging, finding the practice of reducing weight without changing price to be in violation of regulations. The consumer protection association in Hamburg had filed a lawsuit, arguing that consumers were misled by the smaller 90-gram packages being sold in the same wrappers previously used for 100-gram bars. Mondelez defended its actions by stating the new weight was clearly indicated and cited increased costs for cocoa and supply chain issues. The court mandated that 90-gram bars could not be sold in the old 100-gram packaging after a four-month grace period. Mondelez has appealed this ruling to a higher court, though the appeal may have limited practical impact as the grace period has expired.
The German court ruling against Mondelez over Milka packaging changes highlights consumer protection issues related to shrinkflation and deceptive marketing practices.
