SpaceX is preparing to launch its third mission this year supporting the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), deploying intelligence-gathering satellites. The mission, designated NROL-179, will place an undisclosed number of satellites into orbit as part of the NRO's proliferated architecture constellation, believed to be Starshield satellites. Liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base is scheduled for Friday, June 19, during a 35-minute window opening at 1:40 a.m. PDT. This launch utilizes the Falcon 9 booster B1103, marking its third flight. Following deployment, the booster is expected to land at Landing Zone 4, achieving SpaceX's 626th booster landing. This mission is part of the NRO's strategy to enhance coverage and resilience through a large constellation of small satellites. The NRO's Geospatial Intelligence Acquisitions Directorate contributes various satellite types to this architecture, including electro-optical and radar systems.
This report covers a significant space launch mission involving national security assets, detailing the technical aspects of the launch and its strategic importance for intelligence gathering.
