The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) and Search for Common Ground have issued a stark warning regarding the threats to Nigeria's democracy. They identify voter apathy and the pervasive influence of money in politics as major dangers. According to the IPCR's Director-General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the challenges facing Nigerian democracy stem more from inadequate citizen participation and a weak democratic culture than from democracy itself. He noted that declining trust, fear of violence, misinformation, and unmet expectations contribute to voter apathy. The consequences, he warned, include manipulation, exclusion, electoral malpractice, and instability. The agencies urge citizens, especially youth, to actively engage in democratic processes to strengthen governance.
The IPCR's warning about voter apathy and money politics highlights critical weaknesses threatening the stability and legitimacy of Nigerian democracy.
