Top 10% of Consumers Account for Trillions in Environmental Damage, Study Finds
A new study reveals that the wealthiest 10% of global consumers are responsible for trillions of euros in environmental damage annually. This group's consumption patterns contribute significantly to ecological degradation. The principle of 'polluter pays' suggests these high consumers should bear more of the environmental costs. The study estimates the economic cost of their impact ranges from at least €1.5 trillion to €5 trillion per year, equating to €2,000 to €6,500 per person. This finding challenges current environmental policies and calls for a redistribution of environmental costs based on consumption levels.
This study quantifies the disproportionate environmental impact of high-consumption individuals, challenging the 'polluter pays' principle and advocating for greater accountability.
