Bangladesh Bank Simplifies Ship Charter Fee Payments, Boosting Maritime Sector

Bangladesh Bank has introduced a simplified procedure for paying ship charter fees, aligning it with the existing system for aircraft lease payments. This move aims to facilitate Bangladeshi entrepreneurs in chartering and operating vessels, thereby strengthening the country's maritime sector. Authorized Dealer (AD) banks are now permitted to remit foreign currency for leased ships on behalf of locally registered shipping companies. The initiative seeks to increase the number of Bangladeshi-owned ocean-going vessels, reduce reliance on foreign ships, and conserve foreign exchange. Compliance with specific conditions, including regulatory approval and regular reporting, is required.

This policy change by Bangladesh Bank is expected to boost the maritime sector by making it easier for local companies to acquire and operate ships.
