Limburg Warns of Potential 'Serious Plague' of Raccoons in the Netherlands
The province of Limburg is urging for a more robust approach to halt the spread of raccoons, warning that failure to act could lead to a widespread "serious plague" across the Netherlands. The invasive species has been a persistent issue in Limburg, with an estimated 100 to 200 raccoons in the southern part of the province. While population growth has slightly stagnated, it could rapidly increase without intensified control measures. Over 400 raccoons have been culled since 2019. Limburg is allocating €750,000 towards raccoon control until 2030, supplementing previous expenditures. The province emphasizes the need for the national government and other provinces to fulfill their commitments under the national invasive species plan, which aims for complete raccoon eradication by 2027 and halting inflow from Belgium and Germany. However, cross-border cooperation has been limited, as raccoons are widely established in neighboring countries, making eradication challenging.
Limburg's warning about a potential raccoon plague underscores the challenges of managing invasive species and the need for cross-border cooperation and robust control measures to protect biodiversity and prevent ecological damage.
