Nikola Mемov, director of the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund of North Macedonia, advocates for legalizing employment opportunities for pensioners who are in good health and wish to remain active in the workforce. He stated that the labor market needs experienced professionals and that pensioners could significantly contribute, particularly in sectors like private security. Mемov believes allowing pensioners to work would benefit employers with qualified staff, the state through increased contributions and taxes, and pensioners themselves by enabling them to receive both a pension and a salary. Participants at a roundtable discussion agreed that legislative changes are necessary to facilitate greater pensioner participation in the labor market.
This proposal addresses the growing issue of labor shortages by tapping into an underutilized demographic, potentially boosting the economy and supporting individual pensioners.
