Senegalese Exports Plummet 23% in April 2026 Amid Economic Slowdown

L’économie sénégalaise affiche des résultats en dents de scie. Au mois d’avril 2026, les échanges extérieurs du Sénégal ont connu une évolution contrastée, marquée par un coup de frein sur les exportations et une légère hausse des importations. Senegal's economy experienced a significant downturn in exports during April 2026, with a sharp decline of 23.2% compared to the previous month, according to the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD). Exports fell to 547.7 billion FCFA from 713.4 billion FCFA in March, primarily due to reduced sales of key commodities like crude oil, phosphoric acid, non-monetary gold, and liquefied natural gas. Despite this monthly drop, year-on-year exports show a positive trend, increasing by 16.6% to 2,126.8 billion FCFA by the end of April 2026. Conversely, imports saw a slight monthly increase of 3.1% to 546.1 billion FCFA, driven by refined petroleum products and machinery, although rice and fertilizer imports decreased. Annually, imports have decreased by 14.3% compared to 2025, indicating structural improvements in trade balance.

The sharp decline in Senegalese exports highlights economic vulnerabilities and the impact of global commodity prices on the nation's trade balance.
