Ecuador's Interior Minister, John Reimberg, addressed the recent murder of a suspected leader of the 'Los Águilas' criminal group at Guayaquil airport. Reimberg described the incident as 'lamentable' and explained that the deceased, identified as Carlos Alberto Suástegui Villanueva, was able to enter and exit the country because he did not have an active arrest warrant limiting his movement at the time of travel. Despite Suástegui's extensive criminal history, including multiple arrests and serious charges, the judicial system had not issued a current restriction preventing his travel. Minister Reimberg questioned the effectiveness of the judicial system, suggesting that individuals with numerous prior offenses should be incarcerated. He highlighted that security forces apprehend suspects, but judicial decisions sometimes lead to their release, complicating law enforcement efforts.
Ecuador's Interior Minister explained that a murder victim at Guayaquil airport, despite a serious criminal record, could travel freely because no active arrest warrant prevented his movement.
