Cuba is undergoing its most significant economic reforms since 1959, loosening state control over key sectors under pressure from U.S. sanctions. The National Assembly of People's Power has approved 175 changes aimed at introducing market-oriented policies. Central to these reforms is the privatization of companies, banks, and the real estate sector, transitioning state-owned enterprises into share-based commercial entities. The financial sector will now accommodate private banks, and private real estate development will be permitted. The government will also sell state properties to both domestic and foreign entities. Prime Minister Manuel Marrero proposed these reforms, which received unanimous approval. Despite these shifts towards a market economy, President Miguel Díaz-Canel assured that the country remains committed to socialism, framing the changes as necessary to continue socialist development amid a prolonged U.S. blockade.
These reforms represent a major shift in Cuba's long-standing socialist economic model, driven by external pressure, and could significantly alter the island's economic landscape and relationship with the global market.
