The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) aims to register 3.7 million self-employed workers by June 2031, significantly expanding social security coverage in Tanzania. This initiative targets the estimated 85% of the country's workforce operating outside the formal sector. Members enrolled in the scheme will be entitled to benefits such as old-age pensions, survivors' benefits, disability support, and healthcare. Contributions can be made digitally with a minimum monthly payment of 30,000 TSh. Additionally, the Public Service Social Security Fund (PSSSF) is supporting industrialization through strategic investments, such as the Kilimanjaro International Leather Industries Company Limited, which contributes to value addition and job creation.
The expansion of social security coverage to self-employed workers is a crucial step towards enhancing financial protection and economic well-being for a significant portion of Tanzania's population.
