The appearance of rabbitfish in Greek waters has caused concern among the public. However, Anastasia Miliou, director of the Archipelago Institute for Marine Conservation, stated that this is largely misinformation, emphasizing that these fish do not attack humans unless provoked or fed. Miliou explained that the primary issue with rabbitfish concerns fishermen, particularly in areas with intensive fishing of their natural predators. For swimmers, she believes the danger is greatly exaggerated, asserting that 99.5% of the Greek coastline is unaffected. She recommended effective fisheries management, monitoring of invasive species, and support for fishermen as solutions. Miliou also stressed the importance of healthy seas and reduced panic, noting that the rabbitfish population has not dramatically increased.
This report clarifies the actual risks posed by rabbitfish to swimmers in Greece, countering public alarm with expert opinion and focusing on the more significant ecological and economic impacts.
