At least eighteen people were killed in Israeli airstrikes across southern Lebanon overnight and into this morning, according to Lebanon's state news agency NNA. These are reported to be the deadliest attacks in Lebanon since the United States brokered a commitment from Iran to end Israeli violence in the region. Multiple bombings targeted cities in southern Lebanon, with NNA describing the areas as experiencing "one of the heaviest nights of recent aggression" due to a significant escalation by Israel. The Israeli military stated its forces targeted Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure in response to "repeated violations of the ceasefire" by Hezbollah, including rocket fire towards Israeli troops. Despite a fragile ceasefire in place since April 7th, clashes have continued, with Hezbollah launching drones and Israel expanding its combat zone. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reports over 3,783 deaths and 11,699 injuries since fighting intensified in March, displacing over a million people.
These airstrikes represent a dangerous escalation of conflict in the region, potentially jeopardizing a fragile ceasefire and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.
