The court explained its decision to sentence his parents, Vladimir and Miljana Kecmanović, to a combined 17 years and five months in prison. During his time in psychiatric care, Kecmanović reportedly learned to express emotions and developed a belief in God. The court noted his persistent feelings of rejection and his mother's significant influence, stating she prioritized his academic success over his emotional well-being. The court found him psychologically neglected but not legally insane.
