Serhiy Shalaev, a soldier from Kyiv region, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Primorsky District Court of Odesa for the murder of Odesa activist Demyan Hanul. Police evidence established that Shalaev was hired to commit the assassination. He obtained illegal firearms and ammunition, storing them in rented apartments. On March 14, 2025, he shot Hanul multiple times, including in the head. Shalaev was convicted on charges including premeditated murder for hire, illegal weapons possession, and desertion under martial law. The court found him guilty on all counts. The verdict is not yet final and can be appealed within 30 days. Shalaev, a deserter from the 28th Mechanized Brigade, was apprehended shortly after the incident.
