Gender Gap in Work-Life Balance: Women Reduce Hours Nearly 10 Times More Than Men for Caregiving
New data from Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) reveals a significant gender disparity in work-life balance, particularly concerning caregiving responsibilities. In 2025, approximately 328,000 working women reduced their hours or switched to part-time employment to manage caregiving duties, compared to only 33,400 men. This means women were nearly ten times more likely to adjust their work schedules for caregiving. Overall, 33% of women with caregiving responsibilities made changes to their work arrangements, such as remote work or job changes, compared to 18% of men. The statistics clearly illustrate the disproportionate burden of care carried by women.
These statistics highlight the persistent gender inequality in caregiving responsibilities and its impact on women's careers, underscoring the need for policies that promote a more equitable distribution of domestic and professional duties.
