A French musicologist, François-Pierre Goy, has discovered six previously unknown short musical pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. The compositions, written for flute and harp in 1778, were found within a 44-page notebook. Initial suspicions were confirmed by the Biblioteca Mozartiana in Salzburg, which authenticated the work as Mozart's. It is believed that Marie-Louise-Philippine de Bonnières de Guines, daughter of the Duke of Guines, may have assisted Mozart in notating the music during his six-month stay in Paris. The newly discovered pieces, described as a blend of serenade and dance music, have been recorded and will be publicly performed for the first time this Sunday, followed by a radio premiere on France Musique. This rare discovery adds to Mozart's known repertoire.
The discovery of previously unknown Mozart compositions is a significant event for classical music, offering new insights into the composer's work and providing a rare opportunity for public performance and study.
