Ebola Cases Continue to Rise in DRC and Uganda, Outbreak Far from Under Control

The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda has risen to at least 894, with 232 reported deaths in the DRC. The African Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) reports a 38% increase in confirmed infections compared to the previous week, indicating a continued weekly rise. The majority of cases are concentrated in the eastern Congolese province of Ituri, but the virus has also spread to North and South Kivu provinces and neighboring Uganda, where 19 cases and two deaths have been recorded. A major challenge in containing the outbreak is the difficulty in tracing contacts, with only about 15% of the estimated 17,000-35,000 contacts identified. Factors contributing to the spread include ongoing unrest, difficult terrain, and remote communities, hindering aid workers' access. Significant funding has been allocated by the US, EU, and African Union to combat the outbreak, but more resources are deemed necessary. Experiments with treatments for the Bundibugyo variant are underway, but no approved vaccine or medicine is currently available.
