Over 100,000 people have returned to Akobo in South Sudan's Jonglei State after fleeing conflict earlier this year, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). However, returnees face immense challenges, including collapsed healthcare services, widespread food insecurity, severe malnutrition, and deteriorating water and sanitation conditions. All 15 health facilities serving the area were looted and abandoned, halting essential services like vaccinations. Akobo Teaching Hospital is non-operational due to lack of electricity, supplies, and equipment. MSF warns that Akobo is on the brink of famine, with 36% of screened children malnourished, including 15% with severe acute malnutrition. Healthcare demand has surged, with the hospital seeing over 5,000 outpatient consultations and admitting 684 patients despite limited capacity. MSF urges increased humanitarian aid for healthcare, food, water, sanitation, and protection services.
The return of over 100,000 people to Akobo amidst a severe humanitarian crisis, including collapsed healthcare and widespread malnutrition, underscores the urgent need for increased international aid and sustainable solutions.
