Award-Winning Renovation of Historic Carlton Building Celebrates Heritage with Original Features Intact
The renovation of this former pub celebrating its past as much as its present.
A renovation of the historic Carlton building, once a hotel, has earned prestigious awards, including the John and Phyllis Murphy Award for Alterations and Additions and a Heritage Award from the Australian Institute of Architects (Victorian Chapter). Robert Simeoni Architects meticulously preserved the building's heritage, incorporating elements like paint splatters on wooden floors and a 1950s kitchen into the design. The brief was to create a flexible home, studio, and office space while respecting the building's fabric from the late 1800s through the 1970s. Original features such as steel mesh on windows and 1950s kitchen joinery were retained and integrated seamlessly with modern amenities. This approach celebrates the building's past, demonstrating a deep commitment to heritage conservation in contemporary architecture.
This renovation exemplifies a deep respect for heritage, preserving original features and celebrating the history of an old building while adapting it for modern use.
