Johannesburg Faces Widespread Water Disruptions as 16 Pipe Bursts Occur in Six Days

Johannesburg’s ageing water infrastructure is once again on full display, after 16 water-pipe bursts in six days

Johannesburg is grappling with extensive water supply disruptions due to a series of 16 pipe bursts across the city in just six days. Johannesburg Water (JW) confirmed the number of incidents, with approximately half of the bursts having been repaired. Significant issues include a major burst in Dainfern, which led to water quality testing and advisories against drinking tap water in surrounding areas. Other affected suburbs include Douglasdale, Norscot, and Craigavon due to a burst on Crawford Drive. A large burst affecting the Zondi Tower and Dobsonville direct feed continues to impact residents of Dobsonville, Naledi, Zondi, and surrounding areas, with repairs complicated by the need to connect old asbestos cement pipes to steel pipes. Numerous suburbs experienced water outages due to bursts in Kew and Glenhazel, while the Lanseria area and Little Falls also reported significant leaks. Repairs in Robertville and Blairgowrie are also underway, with JW facing challenges in sourcing specialized parts and providing timeframes for service restoration.

The repeated water pipe bursts in Johannesburg highlight the critical state of the city's aging water infrastructure and the ongoing challenges in providing reliable water services to residents.
