Farmers Protest Land Acquisition for BSF Along Bangladesh Border in West Bengal

Farmers in West Bengal's Murshidabad district have protested against the state government's plan to acquire over 500 acres of land for the Border Security Force (BSF) along the Bangladesh border. The Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) has reported that the proposed acquisition affects approximately 15,000 bighas of fertile, three-crop land, supporting five villages and around 600 families. Farmers, many of whom are smallholders cultivating crops like jute, wheat, and vegetables, argue that the compensation offered is insufficient and that the land is vital for their livelihood. The APDR has submitted a report to the district administrator urging the halt of the acquisition process, citing the potential displacement of thousands of people and the loss of crucial agricultural resources. The protests intensified when BSF personnel attempted to mark the land for acquisition on May 31, leading to road blockades and confrontations.

This land acquisition dispute highlights the conflict between national security needs and the livelihoods of local farming communities, raising concerns about fair compensation and sustainable development.
