Flying to Tajikistan's High-Altitude Aerodromes: A Pilot's Perspective on Challenging Flights to Khorog and Murghab
Flights to Khorog and Murghab in Tajikistan are among the most challenging in Central Asia, requiring highly skilled pilots capable of landing at high-altitude airfields. Regular air service between Dushanbe and Khorog was suspended in 2017 after the last An-28 aircraft became inoperable, leaving the Pamir Highway as the only route. Flights to Khorog resumed in October 2024 with an An-28, but schedules remain dependent on weather conditions. While not widely recognized in global media rankings of difficult airports, Khorog (2070m) and Murghab (3657m) present unique challenges due to their canyon locations, single landing approach courses, and high altitudes. Russian FSB aviation crews regularly fly to these locations to support Tajikistan's border structures under a bilateral agreement. These flights are crucial for maintaining connectivity in the remote mountainous region.
This report sheds light on the critical yet often overlooked challenges of operating flights in high-altitude regions, essential for connectivity and logistics in remote areas.
