Greece Tightens Asylum Granting Procedures, Recognition Rates Hit Historic Lows

Greece's Ministry of Migration and Asylum has significantly tightened its asylum granting procedures, leading to historically low recognition rates in the first four months of 2026. The recognition rate has dropped from 71.55% in 2024 to 40.7% by the end of April this year. While the ministry attributes this to more effective management of increased migration flows, human rights organizations and legal bodies express concern over the impact on asylum seekers. Nationalities that previously had high recognition rates, such as Palestinians and Afghans, now face much lower acceptance. Syrian refugees, who historically had near-universal acceptance, now see rates around 47.3%. Ministry officials cite changes in application management and the concept of 'safe third country' as reasons for the decline.
This policy shift in Greece's asylum system has significant implications for refugees and asylum seekers, raising concerns about humanitarian standards and international obligations.
