Zimbabwe's parliament has approved a constitutional amendment that extends presidential terms from five to seven years. This change will allow the current president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose term was set to end in 2028, to potentially remain in office for an additional two years. Furthermore, the new law alters the presidential election process, shifting from direct popular vote to election by parliament. While proponents argue the amendment will foster political and economic stability, critics decry it as a move towards democratic backsliding and a violation of constitutional provisions requiring referendums for term extensions. Mnangagwa, who came to power via a coup in 2017, has faced criticism for economic hardship, corruption, and democratic erosion during his tenure.
This constitutional amendment significantly alters Zimbabwe's governance structure, potentially extending the president's rule and changing electoral processes.
