Police Launch Hunt for Cars with Hidden Compartments: 'We Never Find Tulips'

Law enforcement agencies have initiated a crackdown on the construction of secret compartments within vehicles, which are frequently used by criminals to transport illicit goods such as weapons, drugs, and cash. It is estimated that approximately one hundred builders are actively involved in modifying vehicles at various hidden locations across the Netherlands. Since January of this year, both the possession and creation of such hidden spaces have been criminalized. The police have observed a significant increase in the number of vehicles equipped with these clandestine compartments in recent years. These hidden spaces are becoming increasingly sophisticated, concealed in numerous locations within a vehicle, including under seats, behind dashboards, and within side panels. The police noted that they have never discovered anything innocuous, like tulips, in these compartments, implying they are exclusively used for criminal activities. This legislation aims to tackle the root of the problem by penalizing the modification process itself, rather than solely relying on the discovery of illegal items.
