Vleeshuis Restoration in Ghent Delayed by Discovery of Rare Construction Technique
The reopening of the Vleeshuis in Ghent has been postponed by several months due to an unexpected architectural discovery. During the dismantling of the roof structure, workers found components joined by a rare double mortise and tenon joint, a technique seldom seen in Flanders. Consequently, the building's reopening, initially scheduled for late 2026, is now expected in late March 2027. This delay allows for the proper preservation and study of the historical construction method. The discovery adds significant historical value to the restoration project. Preservationists are working to document this rare find.
The discovery of a rare historical building technique has necessitated a delay in the restoration, highlighting the complexities of preserving heritage structures.
