Melting glaciers in Greenland are releasing an unprecedented number of icebergs into the ocean, creating navigational hazards and altering marine ecosystems. A study published in Nature by researchers from the Technical University of Denmark found that iceberg numbers in the Fram Strait have quadrupled since 2000. This surge is attributed to destabilized glaciers calving more ice and reduced sea ice clearing paths. Beyond shipping risks, these icebergs carry sediments that, upon melting, deposit 'dropstones' on the deep-sea floor. These stones are creating new micro-habitats, increasing biodiversity in previously sparse areas. The phenomenon illustrates a direct link between land-based glacial melt and deep-sea ecological changes.
