Network for Peoples' Action Demands Reversal of 'Unjustified' Electricity and Fuel Price Hikes

The Network for Peoples' Action (NPA), a political platform, has demanded the withdrawal of 'unjustified' price increases for electricity, fuel oil, and gas. The organization presented eight demands to the government, including a call to maintain electricity prices for the first 200 units for specific consumer groups like agricultural irrigation, educational institutions, hospitals, small businesses, and low-income families. The NPA organized a protest rally in front of the National Museum in Shahbag, Dhaka, to voice their opposition. Speakers at the rally argued that the price hikes are unreasonable, especially considering global fuel prices were low when domestic prices remained high, leading to significant government profits. They criticized the government for raising prices during a period of global instability, ignoring the impact on citizens' livelihoods and rising inflation. The NPA also criticized the opposition for focusing on trivial budget matters rather than addressing the price increases. They described the government's budget as unrealistic and detrimental to businesses, citing significant government borrowing from banks. The organization also called for accountability from electricity distribution companies for inefficiencies leading to power outages.
