Mongolia Recovers Rare Dinosaur Fossil Stolen 20 Years Ago

Mongolia has successfully recovered a rare and remarkably well-preserved dinosaur fossil, which was stolen approximately 20 years ago. The fossil, part of a significant collection of prehistoric artifacts, was returned to Mongolia following an international recovery operation. Officials from Mongolia's National Museum of Natural History confirmed the arrival of the fossil in Ulaanbaatar. The recovered collection includes a nearly intact fossil of a rare relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The fossils were initially smuggled out of the country in 2006 for profit. French customs officials first detected some of the stolen items in 2013. Over the subsequent two years, French and Mongolian authorities collaborated under international law to secure their return. The fossils represent various species, including Theropod, Ornithomimosaur, and Hadrosaur, dating back to the Late Cretaceous period. The most significant find is the Tarbosaurus bataar fossil, over half of which is intact, representing a top predator of ancient Mongolia.
