Carlos Alberto Suástegui Villanueva, identified by authorities as the alleged leader of the criminal group 'Los Águilas,' was killed in an armed attack at Guayaquil's José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. The 39-year-old Ecuadorian national was considered a high-priority target by the Ministry of the Interior. The attack occurred near the international arrivals area, prompting a temporary closure of airport operations and a swift police response. Videos show two assailants approaching Suástegui as he exited the terminal. He was reportedly shot at close range, and another individual was injured during the incident. Despite efforts to seek medical attention, several health centers allegedly refused to treat him, and he was eventually taken to El Triunfo, where he was pronounced dead.
