A recently identified painting, previously overlooked, has been recognized as a significant depiction of a crucial meeting in 1608 that marked a pivotal moment in the formation of the Netherlands. The artwork, now attributed to an unknown 17th-century artist, portrays a gathering of prominent political leaders, including Prince Maurits and Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, in the oldest hall of the Binnenhof. Historian Joris Oddens of the Huygens Institute has published research confirming the painting captures the moment the States-General received news of Spain's willingness to engage in dialogue, a step towards international recognition for the Dutch Republic. This painting is considered unique for offering a visual representation of the early Dutch Republic's political culture and the States-General's meeting space. It has been restored and loaned to the Haags Historisch Museum.
