Acclaimed choreographer Sonya Tayeh, a Tony Award winner, is presenting 'The Surge,' a powerful and emotional dance performance dedicated to the late Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O'Connor. A unique aspect of the show is that all dancers are women over the age of 40. Tayeh was deeply affected by O'Connor's death and felt the world had wronged her during her lifetime. The choreographer was inspired by O'Connor's courage and her willingness to speak her truth. Tayeh chose dancers over 40 to give a voice to older women in the arts, whose experiences are often overlooked. The performance, premiering in Manchester, explores themes of survival, spirituality, and self-discovery. It draws inspiration from O'Connor's difficult life and Tayeh's own experiences with bullying.
