Living in a Shrinking Society: Two People Wait for 'Customers' Daily at a Station with Zero Average Ridership
人口減少や高齢化問題に直面し、縮小する地域社会。それを受け入れて力強く、しなやかに生きる人々の息づかいを記者がルポします。 岡山県と広島県の山間部を走るJR芸備線の内名駅（広島県庄原市）。1日に発着するのは上下線で朝、昼、夜の計6本だけ。JR西日本によると、1日の平均乗車人数は2021年度から「0人」が続く。 6月1日昼過ぎ、内名駅を訪れると、ホームにおばあさんとおじいさんの姿があった。2人の手には、「いつもありがとう。また来てね」と書かれた手作りの小旗。午後2時前、下りワンマン列車が駅に到着すると、2人は旗を振って出迎えた。 1両だけの列車に10人ほどの乗客がいるが、降りる人はいない。車窓越しに笑顔で手を振る2人に、乗客も振り返す。運転士が窓を開けて「いつもありがとうございます」と声を掛けて発車。2人は列車が見えなくなるまで旗を振り続けた。 ホーム内の小さな待合室には、地元の児童たちが「ようこそ内名えきへ！」と書いた横断幕が掲げられている。地域の地図や写真なども掲示され、年季は入っているが掃除が行き届いていた。 2人は駅の近くに住む上田ヒフミさん（84）と、高畑政博さん（89）。ほぼ毎日内名駅のホームに立ち、昼に到着する上下線の計2本を出迎え、見送る。 約15年前に上田さんが始め、すぐに高畑さんも加わった。自宅から駅が見えるという高畑さんは毎日、時間になると手押し車を押してやって来る。駅前に手押し車を置き、つえをついてホームに上がる。口数は少なく、駅舎の柱にもたれかかって列車の到着を待っていた。 上田さんは地元で生まれ育ち、内名駅から国鉄の蒸気機関車に乗って二つ先の駅近くにある中学校に通った。就職で故郷を離れた後、蒸気機関車はディーゼル車に変わり、国鉄は民営化されてJR西になった。 10年、年の離れた兄夫婦の介護のため、半世紀ぶりに実家に戻った。中学生の頃は地区に約20世帯があったが、3世帯だけになっていた。利用者がほとんどいなくなった駅は寂れていて、心が痛んだ。
