Immersive Indigenous Language Nest Program Excludes English to Revive Pertame
After learning from Native American Yuchi families, Pertame elders and young mothers in Alice Springs are raising babies in a total immersion Language Nest and hope to extend the model into primary school.
The Pertame Language Nest in Alice Springs offers a total immersion program where children aged zero to five learn exclusively in the Pertame language, leaving English outside the classroom. This initiative aims to revive the language, fulfilling the dream of elders like Christobel Swan. The program is the first of its kind in Australia for Indigenous language immersion. Plans are underway to establish a full immersion school by 2029 to continue the language transmission beyond preschool.
This highlights an innovative and successful approach to Indigenous language revitalization through total immersion education.
