Seal pups and seabird chicks are facing severe threats due to increasingly extreme weather conditions, according to new research. Heatwaves, heavy rainfall, and storm surges are disrupting breeding cycles and reducing survival rates for Australian fur seals, short-tailed shearwaters, and shy albatrosses. The study highlights specific vulnerabilities, such as storm waves washing pups away and the impact of heat on chick development. These species, raising only one offspring annually, are particularly susceptible to repeated breeding failures, jeopardizing their long-term population health.
This research underscores the critical impact of climate change on vulnerable wildlife populations and calls for protective measures.
