Cuba's Parliament has unanimously approved a significant package of economic reforms, marking the most substantial opening of its economy in nearly seven decades. The reforms move the country closer to a market-based economy by reducing government control and allowing private and foreign investment across key sectors, including tourism, agriculture, real estate, banking, and currency exchange. Foreign banks will be permitted to establish operations in Cuba. The government will also open capital in state-owned enterprises and sell properties, including to Cubans living abroad. Entrepreneurs will be authorized to own multiple businesses and hire more than 100 employees, previously prohibited. President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated these changes aim to continue the socialist construction process rather than signify a regime change.
This landmark decision signals a major shift in Cuba's economic policy, potentially impacting its international relations and domestic development.
