Dortmund's Artistic Renaissance: Opera Director's Reform Philosophy Extends Beyond Football
欧州有数の工業地帯として発展してきたドイツ・ルール地方の都市ドルトムント。国際的には、元日本代表の香川真司選手が所属していたサッカーチーム「ボルシア・ドルトムント（BVB）」で知られる街だが、近年は芸術の分野でも注目を集めている。 その中心がヘリベルト・ゲルメスハウゼン総監督（55）の率いるドルトムント歌劇場だ。近年数々の国際的な賞を獲得し、若手歌手を養成するオペラ研修所の拠点になっており、指揮者の小林資典さんをはじめ日本人も活躍している。 4月下旬、ドイツ観光局のプレスツアーに参加してドイツ北西部ノルトライン・ウェストファーレン（NRW）州を訪ねた記者は、国際的な評価向上と人材育成を両立させる劇場運営の実像を探ろうと、ゲルメスハウゼンさんに話を聞くためドルトムントまで足を延ばした。 ゲルメスハウゼンさんはドイツ国内のボン歌劇場やハイデルベルク劇場などでの勤務を経て、2018～19年シーズンにドルトムント歌劇場総監督に就任した。 当時の劇場は客席に空席が目立ち、観客層の拡大が課題だった。16年の調査では「文化的教養を持つ市民層」が中心という一般的なイメージと異なり、多様な職業や社会階層の市民が観客となっていることが分かった。

His reformist philosophy, focused on international acclaim and talent development, has revitalized the institution. Recent surveys revealed a more diverse audience than previously assumed, indicating the opera's growing appeal across various social strata. This artistic revitalization complements the city's established industrial and sporting identity.
